How To Draw A Christmas Stocking

Getting Started

Every Christmas, there’s something magical about getting creative, taking out the art supplies and bringing a festive masterpiece to life. One of the best ways to start painting a winter wonderland is by designing a gorgeous, colourful Christmas stocking!

Don’t be intimidated – there’s no need to be a super-talented artist to draw a stunning stocking! With the right materials and a little patience, even the most amateur artist can create something stunning. So, let’s get started!

Gather Your Supplies

With any artwork, the first step is always to gather the right supplies. For this, you’ll need paper, some pencils, an eraser and an array of coloured pens or markers or any other coloring tool. And then if you want to hang up your stocking at the end, make sure you have some string or yarn too.

Once you’ve gathered your supplies, the fun part can begin! It’s time to start sketching.

Draw your Stocking Outline

To help create the perfect outline for your stocking, first draw two triangles that touch at the points – these will be the two side panels. Then, in the space at the bottom, draw a ‘mouth’ for the stocking. Keep your pencil very light at this stage, so that it’s easy to change things if necessary.

Once the outline is complete, the next step is the fun part: taking your outline to the next level by adding curves.

Adding Curves and Embellishments

Once you have your basic outline, start adding curves to it – think of it like squeezing the stocking. If it helps, use an object like a pencil or roll of tape to help you curve it well. For the hollow at the top, draw a crescent shape, just big enough to fit a gift card or small toy into.

Now it’s time for decoration! Add some stripes along the side panels and use the coloured pens or markers to create different patterns inside. Once finished, you can then add any extra embellishments like candy canes, snowflakes, stars, or pine cones. Feel free to get creative!

Drawing the Toes and Heels of the Stocking

The last things to draw are the toes and heels of the stocking. Draw a rounded point at the bottom, using curves and a little creativity. Once your toes and heels are completed, add any extra detailing of your choice. Maybe you want to draw some snow on the toes, or some Christmas socks? Be as creative as you like!

And That’s It!

Once you’ve finished designing, you can add the finishing touches: cut, colour and glue your stocking to some butcher paper or fabric and then attach some string.

And there you go: your very own charming Christmas stocking has come to life! Now all that’s left to do is hang it up, ready for the big day. Your one-of-a-kind stocking will be the perfect addition to your holiday decorations – and the best part is that you made it yourself!
