How To Draw A Squid

Drawing a squid can be a fun and exciting way to express yourself creatively. Whether you’re an aspiring artist or a seasoned pro, the basics of drawing any marine creature such as a squid remains the same. So whether you’re looking to add relevant details to your masterpiece or just create something cute to enjoy, here are some tips on how to draw a squid.

Step One– Research

Before you get started, it is important to familiarize yourself with the anatomy of a squid. Researching all their amazing features such as the tentacles, eye stalks and suckers will help guide your hand movements. Look up images of different types of squid and analyze their shape, textures, and colors to get a better sense of how they appear in nature.

Step Two– Layout

Now that you have a general idea of what a squid looks like, it’s time to plan out your drawing. Start by sketching a rough circle in the center of your paper to act as the squid’s head. Imagine the circle has 4 sections (like a pie) and draw 4 curved lines to connect the center to the edge of the circle, like a flower shape. These curved lines will form the squid’s tentacles.

Step Three– Shading

Once you have your basic sketch, it’s time to add more detail. Use a darker colored pencil to draw small dots along the tentacles to represent the suckers. Add lines if you’re looking to make the squid look more realistic. Also, draw the eyes towards the center of the circle and add a thick line from the center of the eyes to the base of the head to form the eye stalks. Use different shades of pencil to create shadows and depth in your drawing if desired.

Step Four– Smaller Details

Once your basic sketch and shading are finished, it’s time to add the finer details. Draw in the small fins along the sides of the head and create texture in the tentacles by drawing small circles. Add details to the eyes to make them pop. You can also draw small details in the suckers if you like.

Step Five– Color

Now that your drawing is complete, it’s time to add the fun part: color! You can select any color palette you feel matches the look of a squid. Using crayons or colored pencils, start off with the body and outline for each tentacle, then fill in each section with your desired hue. Add depth to your drawing by using a lighter shade of the same color to make shadowing in certain areas. You can also make interesting details by blending colors. Keep in mind that squid colors vary as they’re found in different parts of the sea, so you have free reign over which colors to use.

Step Six– Finishing Touches

Once you’ve finished coloring your squid, it’s time for the final touches. Look for any small details you might’ve missed and use white pencils to make highlights where needed. Try adding dots or spots to enhance the texture of the squid’s body. If you feel like something’s off, adjust as needed. You may also want to combine colored pencils and crayons to create a unique look.

Step Seven– Enjoy!

Your squid is complete! Who would’ve guessed you could’ve drawn such a mesmerizing creature? Trust your skills and be creative with your colors. Don’t be afraid to experiment and have fun. The end result of your squid should be something that you’re proud of and can happily say was created by your own two hands. Enjoy your masterpiece!
