How To Draw An Hourglass

Are you yearning to become unparalleled at drawing an hourglass? Stop fretting, for you have come to the right place! Drawing an hourglass may seem intimidating but with the right guidance and mastery of certain characteristics, it’s now within your reach!

To start off, you’ll need to visualize what your final hourglass should look like. Is it short or tall, an intricate Tiffany-esque number, or a simple hourglass design? Jot down some ideas on paper and hone in on one sketch.

Now, real masterpieces are created with basic shapes. So don’t be afraid to build your masterpiece from the ground up by first sketching two identical circles overlapping each other with a slight gap in between. After you’ve got the framework out of the way, two spindly lines curving outwards will give you an instant outline of the hourglass.

You can then strengthen this outline by darkening the curves, give them a thicker body. Also use shading to add depth and volume. Take it up a notch and add contrasting colours to your hourglass- brighten it up with yellows, yellows and whites, or create an air of sophistication with neutrals and dark hues.

Move over to the sides of your model and draw in two big loops on each end of your hourglass- the loops will be the stand for the hourglass and give it a more 3D look. To further make it look eye-catching and sculptural, you can draw in cute scalloped patterns and give it a few finishing touches like stars, beads and frames.

The last element for a successful hourglass is texture. Texture makes the hourglass look more realistic and aesthetically pleasing. You can achieve texture with stippling- use a dotting pen to dot and dapple the surfaces and add a furry effect. You can also use hatching and cross-hatching as methods to render shadows and shading.

Next comes perspective – the way you render your hourglass in your artwork is critical. You can choose to draw the hourglass in an isometric angle or give it the illusion of depth by adding a curved line or two in the background. Get creative by playing around with the shape, size and depth of the same hourglass and make it look mesmerizing.

Finally, step back and admire your masterpiece! Your hourglass should now look delectable and deliciously handsome! And if it doesn’t, never lose heart. Practice, patience and determination will help you get the hang of it all.

So don’t be afraid to take it up a notch and take the plunge with your hourglass-drawing artistry. Use various lines, curves, and shapes to craft your hourglass. Draw in textures, shadows and shapes and take it for a spin. Cake it with distinct colors and zesty patterns. And before you know it, you’ll be able to render a pretty and perfect hourglass in no time!
