How to Draw Green Lantern

Drawing Green Lantern from DC Comics may seem daunting at first, but with a little bit of patience and practice, you can easily create him yourself!  Drawing a comic book superhero can be a fun challenge, and as long as you have a few essential supplies and the right technique, you will be able to bring the classic character to life on paper.

Gather Your Supplies

In the first step, you will need to gather the essential supplies. You need a few items that are commonly stocked in art stores. These include pens, erasers, pencils, a drawing board or paper and a light box (optional).  Depending on the type of good quality paper and supplies, you may need to shell out a bit more money.

Sketching Green Lantern

Start sketching Green Lantern with a pencil.  Firstly, draw an outline of his body, starting from the head and working your way down, including all of the details.  Take some time to draw the facial features and different muscle groups within the body.  Add more details based on the reference picture, such as the high collar on the character’s costume and the raised ridges on the wings.

Outline the Drawing

Once you have created a basic sketch of the character’s body, you will need to trace all the outline with a pen.  This will give your character a sharper, more detailed appearance.  Take time to draw the outline carefully, adding all of the details including shadows and highlights of the body.  You can also add any small details you wish, such as the texture of the hair or the wrinkle in the face.

Shading

When you are more or less satisfied with the finished outline of your Green Lantern drawing, you can start shading.  Select your favorite pencils and start filling in the shadows and highlights of the character.  Using light and dark shades and different techniques such as ‘hatching’ and ‘stippling’, add more depth and details to the character.  You can also add any extra details, such as the shape of the eyes.  Be creative and try different techniques to make your drawing come alive.

Coloring and Finishing Touches

Now that your Green Lantern drawing is almost complete, it’s time to give him some color.  Using watercolors and colored pencils, fill in the costume with the classic green and black shades.  Shade the areas with the respective colors and add some additional highlights.  When you’re satisfied with the result, you can add any other finishing touches you feel appropriate.  For example, lines, shadows and additional textures.  Once you’re done, you’ve successfully created a Green Lantern drawing that is ready to be displayed!
